The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, a family-run business located between Brecon and Hay-On-Wye, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this January.

Established by Mark and Christina Cleary in 1990, the garden centre has grown from a modest 8x6ft greenhouse into one of the UK’s premier destination garden centres.

This milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on its journey and look forward to an exciting future.

A journey through time

Founded on the historic site of the old Brecon to Hereford Branch of the Midland Railway, the Old Railway Line Garden Centre began as a small family venture selling homegrown bedding plants.

Christina Cleary recalls the early days: “Mark and I started with just a tiny greenhouse and a passion for plants. Over the years, our love for gardening and the support of loyal customers allowed the business to expand and evolve.”

From its humble origins, the garden centre experienced continuous growth. By 2000, a dedicated plant area had been developed, followed by the opening of a coffee shop in 2001. Major milestones included the construction of the Platform 1 retail space in 2009 and the opening of a state-of-the-art retail building and restaurant in 2012, inaugurated by celebrity gardener David Domoney, who will return in spring to open an exciting new development.

The next chapter

As the garden centre celebrates 35 years, it is also embarking on a new chapter of improvements. Construction is set to begin on a modernised entrance, lobby, and covered plant area in January 2025, to replace current temporary marquee retail space. These developments are designed to enhance the customer experience, creating an inviting and weatherproof shopping environment.

Liam Cleary, Garden Retail Director, shared his vision: “We’re committed to providing the best possible experience for our customers. The new entrance and plant area will ensure the Old Railway Line Garden Centre continues to be a place where people connect, shop, and create memories for years to come.”

A family legacy

The Cleary family is proud to see the next generation stepping up to run the successful business, ensuring the garden centre’s legacy continues to thrive. Mark Cleary expressed his pride: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our three children, alongside Huw and Joe, carrying forward our vision. Their fresh ideas and enthusiasm promise a bright future for the business.”

Looking back, moving forward

Throughout its history, the Old Railway Line Garden Centre has remained dedicated to its core values of quality, community, and customer care. Recognised as the ‘Best Garden Centre in Wales & West’ for 10 consecutive years and ‘Best Garden Centre in the UK’ twice by the Garden Centre Association, the centre has become a beloved destination for gardening enthusiasts and families alike.
