A walker had to be airlifted to hospital from near the summit of Pen y Fan after the windy conditions caused her to injure her ankle.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team were both called to the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons at around lunchtime on Saturday, March 12, to assist the woman.

The walker had injured her ankle on Jacob’s Ladder during the afternoon - she was not taking part in the Fan Dance which was happening at the same time.

Despite the severe winds and windchill on the mountain, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue 187 attended where they steadily winched the woman onboard with the help of the mountain rescue volunteers.

Incredible footage from Brecon Mountain Rescue Team shows the helicopter steadily hovering over the footpath.

A Brecon MRT spokesperson said on Facebook yesterday, Sunday, March 13: “The team were called yesterday afternoon to a casualty in the Jacobs Ladder area on Pen y fan who had sustained an ankle injury.

“Due to the conditions on the top being incredibly windy, Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue 187 was requested for assistance. Just as team members were arriving on scene, Rescue 187 had also just arrived and thankfully managed to extract the casualty.

“Many thanks to Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team who were also arriving to help us with the extraction if needed. We wish the casualty a quick recovery.”

Both Brecon MRT and Central Beacons MRT are voluntary groups who are on-call to help people in trouble in the Beacons 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Both teams rely on public donations and money from fundraising to keep going - paying for fuel, equipment and to maintain their bases among other things.

The Central Beacons MRT also wished the woman a speedy recovery.

Speaking online, a spokesperson for the group said: “Lunchtime yesterday (Saturday) we were called by our colleagues at Brecon Mountain Rescue Team to help the rescue of a walker with an ankle injury near the summit of Pen Y Fan.

“Due to the severity of the wind strength and windchill effect at the summits, further assistance was sought from our colleagues at Maritime and Coastguard Agency #R187 #StAthan. As our team members reached the summit with Brecon members, the aircraft crew winched the person on board and flew them to hospital, Our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.”
