This drone image show the new staff car park at Brecon War Memorial Hospital taking shape, with the majority of the construction work nearing completion.

Powys Teaching Health Board (PHTB) has said that delays have been experienced in delivery of electrical items due to the current challenges in the marketplace.

The car park is set to open shortly, once the final lighting elements have been delivered and installed.

During the last period, the pedestrian access has begun construction and the tarmac base course has also been installed.

Thanks to the recent rain, the grass seed on the bank areas are beginning to germinate. Topsoil and grass seed work is around 85 per cent complete.

The germinating seed is greening up the site, helping the car park blend in with the surroundings.

Heading towards the final stages of the project, PHTB is working closely with Brecon Beacon National Parks Authority on finalising elements of the detailed landscape plan. the scope of works for the car park has been approved with biodiversity being one of the key results from the works.

John Morgan, support services manager for south and mid Powys said: “The new car park is an exciting and much-needed addition to the Hospital estate and with the support and cooperation of our colleagues will ensure that the existing car park facilities become more accessible, safer and user-friendly for our patients and visitors.”

The project team is a multi-disciplinary team which is made up by Powys Teaching Health Board’s Capital Team, Burroughs and WW Bowen Ltd.

There is a strong local link to the works being undertaken at the car park site.

90 per cent of WW Bowen Ltd staff are from within 10 miles of Brecon. The majority of the materials bought for the project are from within 25 miles of Brecon, and specialist external subcontractors used on the project are all, bar one, Wales-based.

Gary Price, quantity surveyor at WW Bowen Ltd said: “ WW Bowen Ltd as a Brecon company were overjoyed at winning the tender for the new hospital carpark, we saw this as a great opportunity to give something much-needed back to the hospital and the community as a whole.

“As a local contractor we fully appreciated the need for the carpark, and the positive effect it will have on the community hospital which has served us all in some way. For example the director of the company Gary Bowen’s own mum Lynda Bowen, worked in the hospital for 39 years and recalls fond memories of her time there. In addition my own son was born at the hospital, so our hearts were fully invested in the project.

“We have faced some difficult engineering works due to the location in the bank, above the existing hospital and working on a live ambulance route. But working with PTHB and their designs team Burroughs each obstacle was overcome to achieve the best outcome for all involved and the new scheme. Now we are nearing the end of the scheme, we can start to see the finished product and how much of a difference it will make to hospital. This give us great pleasure knowing we have played our part in it.”
