Brecon Mountain Rescue Team has announced that they raised more than £10,000 from their BEAT THE BEACONS” (BEAT) event held on Saturday, September 28.

BEAT is an annual one-day challenge event for both walkers and runners, to raise much needed funds for Brecon Mountain Rescue team. It starts and finishes in the beautiful Welsh village of Talybont-on-Usk and offers three different route choices for participants.

The most challenging follows a 22-mile route reaching the highest points of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), including the iconic Pen y Fan.

The “Adventure” route has stunning views and is 15 miles, with an option to be guided by members of Brecon Mountain Rescue Team themselves, for those who are a little unsure about navigation.

And there is also a 10-mile, family friendly taster route on lower elevation footpaths exploring the Usk Valley, designed for lesser experienced walkers and families to enjoy.

A spokesperson for Brecon Mountain Rescue Team said: “Over 150 people took part in the event, on what proved to be a glorious day.

“Amongst those participating were Anna and Sam who got engaged high up in the hills! They arrived back at the finish line to receive congratulations, flowers and fizz from the Mountain Rescue Team.”

BEAT is a vital part of the team’s annual fundraising activities. Brecon Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by 50 volunteers and funded entirely by donations.

Mountain rescue services are free to those in need because the teams are staffed by volunteers. However, equipment, vehicles and maintaining a headquarters all cost money, and the teams volunteers must raise sufficient funds to maintain the service. It costs approximately £70,000 each year to keep Brecon Mountain Rescue Team operational.

100 per cent of the funds raised from BEAT go directly to support the Team.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team’s next fundraising challenge event, the Black Dragon Challenge, takes place on Saturday, April 5 2025.
