Brecon FC’s all-girls team have decided to enter the South Powys Junior League, where they will take on boys teams and mixed teams in their maiden season.

“The girls have worked tirelessly to prepare and have been amazing as a group,” said Billy Brown, the coach of the team and parent to one of the players.

“They have come together to encourage and support each other to go straight in as a team playing in the South Powys Junior League.”

The team have trained all summer long and have gathered sponsorship from LittleCwtch and CMJ Motors who helped provide kit for training and matches.

Many of the group are new to football, and are raring to go ahead of their upcoming fixtures. Billy said: “It’s been a real drive from the girls to make this happen and the community has supported them as has the rest of the junior club.

“They’ve really got on board and encouraged the girls and that’s important to have that encouragement from the senior clubs in getting the girls involved. There are not many girls’ leagues so they usually go ‘yes you can go and train’ but it doesn’t usually filter through to playing matches and games.

“The girls have been fantastic; it’s all driven by them. They’ve chosen training kit, playing kit was dictated by club colours of course but they can’t wait to play.

“We’ve got some friendlies coming up all around the country so we’re looking forward to them.”

Speaking about the emergence of women’s and girls’ football, Billy said: ““I’ve never seen many girls playing in my ten to fifteen years involved in coaching but the last few years the number of girls playing football has increased so much and the Lionesses were immense for that and now Wales women are pushing on as well. It’s a great thing to see.”

The girls will play in their first competitive league match this Saturday, September 7.
