Brecon is set to feature as a holiday destination in the first episode of a new S4C series airing next week.

Gwyliau Gartref (Holiday at Home), aims to showcase what Wales has to offer in terms of hospitality regardless of budget.

In the very first programme, which airs on S4C on Tuesday, August 9 at 9pm (also available on S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer), two teams arrive in Brecon for very different experiences.

Each week, at the heart of the challenge will be two teams and one destination. What sets the team’s experiences apart is the budget. One team – a family or group of friends, will receive a significant allowance to enable them to have a luxury holiday, and the other gets a smaller budget which means being a bit more creative when choosing accommodation and activities.

So two teams, one destination and two budgets - and Brecon and its surrounding areas will be the focus of the first episode in the series.

“My perfect holiday is being on one of the beaches of the Maldives, relaxing on the sand and swimming with the dolphins,” said Ifan Evans from Carmarthenshire.

Lucky then, that his sister Miriam is a bit easier to please: “Well for me every holiday is perfect.”

The two of them are spending the weekend with their parents Ann-Marie and Fabio, as well as a special family member, Teddy the dog, who has come for his first ever holiday.

“It’s lovely to appreciate what we have at home,” said Ann-Marie.

The second team visiting Brecon are Sioned, Stacey, Tania and Nia – who are all teachers and classroom assistants from Lampeter. While they are well used to keeping things orderly in class, this time they have no control over their choice of holiday. But they are all in agreement about what they don’t like.

“I hate sleeping in a tent,” said Sioned.

“Yes, in the middle of a field,” said Nia

“Yes and bugs and things. Ych no,” said Tanya.

“I’m not a big fan of animals, so hopefully there won’t be any animals around this weekend” added Nia.

Who will have a weekend of being pampered, and who will have to watch the pennies?

Whatever lies ahead, Tanya is determined to enjoy: “School’s out and we’re looking forward to the weekend.”

With one team travelling in style on the canal and the other having to walk to discover the beauty of south Wales’s largest waterfall, we will see whether you can have the same enjoyment no matter what your budget.

During the series, there will also be an opportunity to experience short breaks to suit any pocket in Llangrannog, Betws y Coed and Beaumaris.

Gwyliau Gartref airs on S4C on Tuesday, August 9 at 9pm. English subtitles are availbale.
