“May Fest at the Shoemakers” is back in the beautiful village of Pentre-bach, just a short drive along the A40 from Brecon.
The two-day festival, now in its second year, promises an exciting lineup of live music from both international and local performers. There will be something for everyone, including kids' activities, face painting, delicious food from a barbecue and a range of beers and bars to enjoy.
Hosted by the Shoemaker’s Arms, the free festival will take place over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, on May 24 and 25.
Flying in from overseas will be the Ripples (from Majorca), a rocking band with hints of the Rolling Stones, as well as reggae artist Julian Wenn from South Africa.
Local artists will be well represented too, with performances by Llandovery Male Voice Choir, the Brecon Town Concert Band, local folk ensemble Hewn-wood, and Brecon-based finger-picker Josh Headington.
Experience the Beatles is a local cover band that will surely have everyone singing along on Saturday night, and the first night closes with Isonet, a pop-dance act that fuses classic feel-good songs with driving beats and live violin playing.
Sicknote Steve (Cardiff’s answer to international star Seasick Steve) is back this year to perform his raw, energetic blues, and there’s more rhythm and blues from the Skinny Cat Blues Band, closing the festival on Sunday night.
Festival organiser and Shoemaker’s publican Ryan Humphrey is aiming to offer something for everyone.
“Last year was such a great event - we’ve got a lot to live up to,” he said.
“We learned a lot - so this year might be even better.”
Both days’ events kick off at 2pm, and the main performances will be followed by informal singing and sessions in the pub. Camping for £10 is available in a local field.
Although the festival is free to attend, there will be collection buckets coming round - all proceeds will be donated to the Welsh Air Ambulance.
“Last year we raised around £300 for St David’s Hospice, and the whole community is keen that we used the event to raise money for a good cause,” said one of the festival organisers.
“We’re a community pub and want to put on an event that brings people together and also supports a good local cause,” added Ryan.
“We’re hoping for sunshine - but we’ve got a marquee big enough for the whole beer garden so we’re covered in any case.”
