On Saturday, April 13 Brecon Mountain Rescue Team received a callout from Dyfed-Powys Police after a group of four became lost in low cloud whilst descending from The Bomber Memorial to Blaen Y Glyn above Talybont-on-Usk Reservoir.
Following the group’s initial call for assistance, they then lost signal meaning the rescue team couldn’t receive further information from them.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team deployed their drone and search parties. The drone was deployed to search the Blaen Y Glyn valley and team members tasked to visit all local car parks and lay-bys to ascertain if the missing group had made there own way back to their car.
The team’s new drone has a Thermal camera or FLIR (Forward looking infra-red) and was used in the search to quickly pick up walkers in the area and direct parties on foot to check them out.
The group of four had managed to self rescue and as soon as they were back in signal, on their drive home, contacted the team to assure them they were safe.
A spokesperson for the rescue team said: “If you are lost or in need of medical assistance in a wild and remote place away from road vehicle access, phone 999 or 112 ask for the Police and ask them to contact Mountain Rescue.”
