A disabled war veteran from Brecon launched his latest book last week.
Jonathan Morgan officially launched his sixth book at Theatr Brycheiniog last Friday.
The launch of ‘The Politicians of Wales Through the Ages’ was a successful evening, with an attendance of around 80 people.
Launched by the Mayor of Brecon, Cllr David Meredith, the invited attendees enjoyed drinks and nibbles with music, as well as songs from the shows by Mike Chappel and Carwyn Whormseley.
The book is another in the series inspired by Jonathan Morgan’s lack of confidence as a Welshman in the army, and shows again what the Welsh have achieved, this time at the heart of politics in this country.
Mr Morgan explained: “The book starts during the reign of Elizabeth I with the great Tory Cecil family, who many people didn’t know came from Pandy, just outside Abergavenny.
“Also, many won’t realise that Oliver Cromwell came from a Welsh family and that Gladstone had a Welsh wife and lived in Wales.
“Lloyd George and Nye Bevan were probably the most famous of the Welsh politicians although some don’t realise that Michael Howard, Michael Heseltine and Geoffrey Howe came from Wales on the Conservative side and there was a whoie raft of well known Labour politicians such as the Kinnocks, Viscount Tonypandy and Jim Griffiths.
“The Social Democrats provided Roy Jenkins and David Owen and in the book there are essays about the Liberals of Montgomeryshire and Brecon & Radnor.”
Mr Morgan added: “There are some visiting essayists such as Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Professor Russell Deacon,(Chair of the Lloyd George Society), Graham Lippiatt,(it’s secretary), Robin Lewis, Chris Thomas, who are both experts in their own fields of Ivor Philipps and Rhodri Morgan. Sir Paul Silk has written the foreword and Glyn Mathias, former poxlitical editor of ITN and BBC Wales writes the conclusion.
“For a small country, it’s amazing how influential Wales and the Welsh have been!”
The outstanding and clever illustrations in the book are by renowned artist Robert Macdonald, who also lives locally.
The book can be bought at The Hours Bookshop at Brecon Cathedral, for £10.
100 books have been sent to current politicians in Wales with the compliments of the author and a hopeful donation to Combat Stress.
