Brecon is joining the Pride Cymru celebration by flying the Pride rainbow flag over the Guildhall this week.

The Pride flag, which is the symbol of the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community, has been flying for the first time in Brecon this week.

Brecon Town councillor Sam Bennett suggested the flag, which is also often used to express solidarity with persecuted homosexual people around the world, be flown above the centre of Brecon at a town council meeting in April when the council were discussing flag protocol.

It was one of various flags to be suggested along with the flag of the Nepalese community.

Cllr Bennett previously said he wants everyone to feel welcome in Brecon irrelevant of their sexuality or gender.

He tweeted yesterday: "Fantastic to see the rainbow flag flying from Brecon Town Council for Pride Cymru, a powerful message to show everyone is always welcome in our lovely community #LoveBrecon and a strong rebuke to the #haters who need to learn #loveislove #equality #proud."

When asked about how he felt about the LGBT flag flying over the Guildhall, Cllr Bennett today said: "I think in Brecon, which is quite a progressive and tolerant town, it will be welcome and well received which is as I would expect.

"In general, it’s more about time than anything. In 2012 we saw equal marriage come in thanks to the Liberal Democrats in the government.

"It represents the ongoing march - we had so much fuss on our initial posts on social media before.

"It just goes to show that while we do now have more equality like equal marriage, we do still have some way to go."
