Residents of Gwenllian Morgan Court in Brecon gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone as their dear friend Vera marked her 100th birthday on Thursday, March 6.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement as everyone squeezed into the lounge, eagerly awaiting the arrival of a very special guest - the Mayor of Brecon, Cllr John Powell.
Cllr Powell brought a beautiful bouquet for Vera and shared a heartwarming chat with her.
Vera's son, John, and his wife, Ruth, were on hand to help distribute an array of delicious food, including sandwiches, pork pies, scones - served the Devon way - trifles, cakes, and a beautiful birthday cake made by Vera’s daughter-in-law. Although it was too early for wine, guests were content with teas and coffees as they enjoyed the feast.

A rendition of “Happy Birthday" was sung in both Welsh and English, much to Vera’s delight. John, her son, gave a brief but humorous speech about his mother, joking that wherever he moved, she was sure to follow. Vera, originally from West Bromwich in the Midlands, spent much of her life running two pubs - one in West Bromwich and the other in Wednesbury. Despite her small stature, Vera's son shared fond memories of her working behind the bar, pulling pints and making sure everything was in order.
Vera’s love for animals, particularly cats, was also highlighted, with John reminiscing about how his mother would be out in the garden at 4am, searching for any missing felines.
The highlight of the celebration came when Vera was presented with a special card from the King and Queen.
John expressed his gratitude for everyone’s attendance and thanked the residents who helped make the party a memorable event for Vera. Throughout the celebrations, Vera sat contentedly, a smile on her face, clearly enjoying the warmth and love surrounding her.
