A team of care workers have been recognised for their outstanding contribution during the past year at the annual Shaw Star Awards 2024.

The 15th Shaw healthcare national awards ceremony took place at The Tortworth Court Hotel in Gloucestershire last week and was hosted by former Eastenders star and entertainer, Shaun Williamson.

Cartref Care Home in Hay-on-Wye won the ‘Care and Compassion’ award after being nominated by staff members and residents’ families. The award, sponsored by Blueleaf, recognises employees who have considered the individual needs of the residents and those who deliver care that reflects their passion of delivering person-centred care.

The home was commended for providing outstanding end of life care to someone whose family was unable to be with them with staff coming in on their days off to make sure they were never alone.

Another support worker at the home, Bethan Jackson, even took time out of her wedding day to spend time at the home so residents could be a part of her special day.

Operations manager, Ross Anderson, said: “This award is very well deserved. I am beyond proud of the team at Cartref and how they strive to deliver the very best care to our residents. They show care and compassion in abundance and treat those in our care with the utmost respect and dignity.”

Cartref, which is operated by Shaw healthcare on behalf of Powys County Council, was one of eight award winners recognised at the event.

Russell Brown, CEO of Shaw healthcare, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the awards and the number of nominations we received this year has been incredible. Each one is an inspirational story of personal achievement and genuine care and we are very lucky to have these people working for Shaw.

“As an employee-owned company it is important that we celebrate the Shaw family, so I want to say a huge congratulations to everyone at Cartref and our other winners and also all the nominees - all of whom exemplify Shaw’s ethos of striving to provide the care we would want for our own loved ones.”
