The Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist has been a place of worship for over a thousand years and is a building with a fascinating historical past. It is the Mother Church of the Diocese of  Swansea and Brecon and, although a building of relatively modest proportions, is set in a walled Close which is unique in Wales. The remains of the former monastic buildings today provide the administrative centre for the Diocese as well as housing for the Cathedral clergy and The Hours coffee shop. This remarkable collection of buildings is the finest of its kind in Wales and offers a welcome to all (including dogs).

LOOKING BACK OVER THE PAST MONTH

Choir tour to Munich

The Lay Clerks (adult singers) are back from their tour to Munich which took place from July 24 - 29 . The choir sang in Rosenheim, Andeches Monastary and churches around Munich and also linked up with Munich Bach Choir. The choir sang a varied repertoire of English church music including a Nunc Dimittis set to music by Carwyn Whomsley one of our Lay Clerks who is now studying composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. The Cathedral Choir is looking forward to returning to Germany in the future.

Brecon Jazz

The Cathedral Close was buzzing all weekend and what a huge range of events were on offer: from the start of the Frazz Parade to intimate jazz quartets in the Tithe Barn and snooker legend Steve Davis and modular synthesisers!

• August 23 – John Eyre on guitar. John was self-taught until he was seventeen and then studied guitar with Robin Pearson from 1978 to 1981, going on to Clarendon College in Nottingham and Hull University. He has been studying guitar and harmony ever since, and continues to write and record songs and instrumentals.

• August 30 – Rowan Shields and Zoe Solomon (tenor and piano) close the season.

On Foot and in Their Own Words – Saturday, August 24, 7:30pm
