BRECON-born TV presenter Catrin Nye has landed the job of her dreams as the host of BBC One Wales’ new topical debate programme The Hour.

Catrin, 33, was born in Brecon, grew up in Cwmbach and went to Gwernyfed High School, before heading out on a meteoric career as a radio and TV reporter and documentary maker.

Her most high-profile roles until now have been presenting the BBC's Panorama programme and working as a regular reporter on Victoria Derbyshire's morning show.

She’s also won numerous awards for her hard-hitting journalism, including Mind Journalist of the Year for a documentary on mental health problems in the British Asian community and two Sandford St Martin Awards for excellence in broadcasting about religion.

Catrin’s new programme, The Hour, will travel to locations across Wales starting with as visit to the GS Yuasa factory in Ebbw Vale on Monday, October 30.

Future locations are not yet fixed but Catrin says she hopes the programme will at some point be coming to Powys.

The Hour will focus on some of the major issues shaping the Welsh and UK political agenda and encourage the people of Wales to voice their opinions on those issues. The debates will feature members of the public, politicians and experts sitting side by side on a circular set as they explore each subject.

Excited at the prospect of hosting this ground-breaking series, Catrin said: “I can’t wait to get started on The Hour.

“I’ve always wanted to host a proper debate show and to get to travel the length and breadth of Wales finding out what really matters to people is an amazing opportunity.

“I’ve been able to travel the whole world as a journalist but this is the place that matters to me the most.”

“This is a real opportunity to have a proper debate about what matters to people in Wales and how the political decisions made in Cardiff and Westminster impact ordinary people’s day to day lives.

“I want The Hour to be owned by the Welsh public so that everyone can have their say on the things that matter to them, get straight answers to questions and talk about politics in a way we can all understand.”

Viewers will be invited to connect with The Hour on social media with Glanamman-born Steffan Powell, a reporter with BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, charged with bringing their voices to the programme.

Produced for BBC Wales by Avanti Media, the production team will be led by Avanti Media creative director Neil Grant, whose credits include Panorama and Dispatches, Clare Hudson – the former head of English language programmes at BBC Wales – as well as the former head of news and current affairs at ITV Wales, Elis Owen.
