Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team were called out by South Wales Police on Monday, August 19, to assist with a search for for a missing elderly vulnerable male in the Caerphilly mountain area.

After producing a search plan with police officers, the search teams began their work, including Search Dogs Bran and Cizzie from Search and Rescue Dog Association South Wales.

After a while, one of the police officers found a shoe, believed to be belonging to the missing male.

Calling his name was returned by a voice from within densely growing undergrowth.

A spokesperson for the team said: “All other search teams ceased their search areas and rapidly made their way to the casualty site. The dense bracken was beaten back and cut to allow our Casualty Care Medics access to the male.

“With heavy rain moving in we had significant concerns about his condition with lowering level of consciousness and body temperature.

“An urgent request for Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust ambulance was followed by a rapid evacuation out of the undergrowth, onto our stretcher with insulation and rewarming pads and we’re grateful for the help of a local farmer who offered his 4x4 to help transport through the fields to the waiting ambulance at the roadside.

“We strongly feel a life was saved in the nick of time as a result of great joint agency working.”
