A Crickhowell woman is aiming to sell crocheted snowflakes to raise money for local food banks this Christmas, amid the cost of living crisis.
Sam Bennett is trying to raise money for food banks across Brecon and Radnorshire by selling crocheted snowflakes.
The collection for the proceeds will be the week before Christmas - as the 57-year-old attempts to support her local community as the cost-of-living crisis sweeps the nation this winter.
“I started snowflakes for food banks as a way to raise more money for local food banks than would otherwise be possible through my efforts,” she said.
“The cost of living crisis we are facing is accelerating - nearly a quarter of the population of Wales are below the poverty line - this is the highest in the UK and rising.
“Food banks are a lifeline, proceeds from the local sales of snowflakes for foodbanks will be collected the week before Christmas and our local food bank will be provided with items that they need the most.”
Initially, the plan is to supply Brecon Food Bank with the proceeds from the fundraiser, however, Sam has ambitions to supply other food banks in the local area if she can get the support she needs.
Sam said: “I would like to be able to help more than one food bank, if I can get enough people to help me make these I could help Brecon and Builth perhaps Abergavenny.”
She also has ambtions to keep this going further than Christmas - with similar crochet themed-fundraisers on the horizon.
“I think I’ll carry on doing this for the rest of my life, so maybe we will have an easter food bank. This is a drop in the ocean, but I think the community spirit makes people feel better to help others out, so I’d like to continue this moving forward,” added Sam.
