There’s another chance to watch Derek Brockway’s visit to Ystradgynlais in an episode of BBC Wales’ Weatherman Walking next week.
During the episode, Derek joins the Route 43 cycle path, part of the Celtic Trail, and soon reaches the old Twrch Aqueduct. It is part of the Swansea canal that used to transport coal for the copper industry. It closed in the 1930s with the introduction of the Ystradgynlais railway and has since been regenerated as part of the cycle path.
Derek also pays visit to the Knitting Nanas, a group of women on a mission to decorate the streets of Ystradgynlais all year round with their seasonal knitwork. The Nanas must show patience though when attempting to teach Derek to knit!
Derek then meets a local historian at the remains of the ironworks, to learn about its history and how it revolutionised iron production, before finishing his walk at the top of the Black Mountain.
Joining Derek in this episode is Matt Bassett, who meets Karen, a champion for making public footpaths accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. And Lauren Moore meets a couple who have bought a woodland area, with the aim of eventually living off-grid.
This episode will air on Tuesday, September 3 at 7pm on BBC One Wales.
