A charity auction held last month has raised an incredible £20,000 for a closure threatened primary school.
The event, which was held on Friday, November 26, was in aid of Llanfihangel Rhydithon Community Primary School, better known as Dolau school.
The auction was organised by ‘Friends of Dolau School’ and ‘Dolau school action group’, and was well attended by Dolau residents, friends, family as well as supporters who visited from far and wide.
There were over 150 lots in the auction, which had been kindly donated by businesses from the local area, Powys and beyond, all keen to do their bit to support the school and secure its future.
Items ranged from gift cards and hampers, to outdoor pursuits and hotel stays. Donations to be auctioned were still being received on the night such was the eagerness from attendees on the evening and donors, to save the school.
Llanfihangel Rhydithon Community Primary School is one of several primary schools in Powys earmarked for possible closure by Powys County Council from next year.
Tom Miles, from Dolau School Action Group, said: “The outpouring of support from donors and buyers really emphasises the importance of Dolau school, which sits right at the heart of the Dolau community and the esteem in which it is held.
“The long hard battle to save the school is far from over and the community will do everything to ensure events like this continue into the coming weeks, months, and years to maintain the excellent standard of education at Llanfihangel Rhydithon School.”
Fresh from their support of the fundraising efforts the children of Dolau school won the ‘Miniature Winter Garden 4-11 years Schools’ competition at the Royal Welsh Show Winter Fair.
Beating competition from other schools across Wales, Dolau school continued to show it is small but mighty.
