This Saturday (December 2) at 7:30pm Brecon Singers bring Bach’s sparkling Christmas Oratorio to Brecon Cathedral, with a fabulous selection of professional soloists.

The soprano soloist Georgie Malcolm performs across the UK as an oratorio soloist and internationally in opera. Camilla Seale, the alto soloist, is a keen national performer of the baroque repertoire and also opera. Welsh tenor William Searle is busy performing oratorio, song and also opera across the UK. Thomas Lowen, bass soloist, currently enjoys a varied career as a soloist, ensemble and opera singer in the UK and abroad.

Supporting the soloists as ‘echo’ is Nansi Jones, currently a pupil at Brecon High School. Nansi is a recipient of a bursary from the legacy awarded to the Brecon Singers by the late William Sydney Phillips. This will be her first time singing with Brecon Singers who look forward to her singing with them again in the future.

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio was written in 1734 when he was 49 and working as Cantor of the Thomaskirche and school in Leipzig. The Oratorio contains well-known Lutheran hymn tunes woven between Bach’s lyrical composition. It reflects on the Nativity and is devotional music originally designed to be sung in six separate church services on specific dates in the Christmas calender. It is full of beautiful melodies and the hymn tunes may be familiar to many members of the audience.

Brecon Singers is directed by the inspirational Robert Evans, assisted by Alan Davies who lends valuable support to the choir during rehearsal with his gifted piano playing. The concert will be accompanied by the fabulous Brecon Beacons Chamber Orchestra.

There will be an interval during which wine and soft drinks will be served.
