Wildlife expert and Springwatch presenter Iolo Williams is heading down to the banks of the River Wye as part of a new BBC Wales television series.
In a new four-part series, Iolo's Borderlands, Iolo continues his journey exploring nature along the border between Wales and England.
In the second episode, Iolo heads to the banks of the River Wye between Hay-on-Wye and Glasbury. The river is one of the most important rivers for wildlife conservation in the UK. There are many different birds here, but Iolo is over the moon when he discovers a very rare bird across the river, one that he hasn’t seen in this area since 1998 – the yellow wagtail.
In the river near Llyswen Bridge, there’s a peculiar and ancient creature that comes upstream to spawn – the sea lamprey. Cameras are given special permission to capture these bizarre looking creatures in action, sucking rocks and moving them to make room to lay their spawn.
In the woods below the Black Mountains, Iolo meets mammal expert Phil Morgan who’s carrying out a licensed dormouse survey. Iolo is keen to see a dormouse up close, but will he succeed?
Iolo's Borderlands airs on BBC One Wales on Monday, April 10 at 7pm, or on BBC Two on Friday, April 14 at 7pm.
