Derek Brockway will visit Llandovery and Llanwrtyd Wells in an upcoming episode of Weatherman Walking.
In the fifth episode of this series, the weatherman and BBC Wales presenter begins in the market town of Llandovery. The seven-mile walk will take Derek north through woodlands and across fields towards Cynghordy, before making a final stop via the Heart of Wales railway.
Derek visits 12th-century Llandovery Castle, which has witnessed countless conflicts between the Welsh and English. In 1400, King Henry IV of England stamped his authority on the castle, which was then besieged during the Owain Glyndŵr rebellion three years later. On the grounds near the castle stands a stainless-steel monument to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan, a local landowner who fought in support of Owain Glyndŵr’s campaign.
Much of the land in the area is agricultural, with farms dotted over the landscape. For the next generation of farmers, young farmers clubs are a lifeline. Rhian, who is part of the Llandovery Young Farmers Club, discusses how it helps the community to come together, making new friends and trying new experiences, including pantomimes, eisteddfods and tug-of-war, which Derek finds himself competing in.
At the end of his walk, Derek hops on the Heart of Wales railway in the village of Cynghordy for one final stop in Llanwrtyd Wells. Here, he is set to take part in a popular event that has been going since the 1970s – the World Bog Snorkelling Championships.
Derek is joined in the episode by presenter Matt Bassett. Llandovery is set to become the county’s first cycle-friendly destination, with the hope to attract cyclists to visit and stay in the town. A keen cyclist himself, Matt now uses a hand cycle, which attaches to his wheelchair, using his arms to pedal. He finds out more about the town’s plan and what makes it an ideal location.
Wildlife biologist Lizzie Daly meanwhile, is walking through the rare Atlantic oak woodland of the RSPB Gwenffrwd-Dinas Nature Reserve, in search of pied flycatchers.
The episode will air at 8pm on Monday, June 12 on BBC One Wales.
