On Friday, May 17, hoards of local people streamed into Llangorse Village Hall in anticipation of a fun and sociable evening at the grand quiz where 30 teams were seated, eager to start at 7pm.

Jo Copping opened the evening, explaining how the Brecon and Sennybridge branch of Cancer Research Wales had split from Cancer Research UK in 2008, as the Welsh charity spends less on overheads and all funds raised in Wales are spent in Wales. She then introduced Dr Peter Henley from HQ in Cardiff who spoke for a few minutes about the many innovative research projects going on throughout Wales, and who then joined a team.

Ben Jones was the able quizmaster who read out some very entertaining questions, many based on Welsh interest and the local area which gave the quiz a community feel, with many commenting that they had enjoyed the questions. The final result was a wonderful total of £2,740 raised for Cancer Research Wales from a very generous community - a total of £420 came from donations.

At half-time the committee served a light supper of filled rolls and salad, cheese and biscuits and an abundance of delicious home-made cakes, generously sponsored by St Mary’s Bakery, Morrisons Brecon and the cheese company, Milk First .

As the end drew near, with some teams eager to beat their rivals from previous times, the excitement was palpable. As it happened, Team Coffee narrowly beat St Mary’s Church, but a marking error was discovered, resulting in a tie! Both teams declared themselves happy with the result.
