Llandovery Farmers’ Market’s last day of 2024 will go out with acoustic accompaniments on Saturday, October 5 on Market Square.
Wolf Magdala and The Cardboard Box Thieves make their market debut to entertain shoppers enjoying a broad range of local food produce.
Coinciding with UK Fungus Day, visitors may also bring examples of their own mushrooms for identification at the market.
Wolf Magdala kicks off at 10am. They are guitarist and singer duo, Rob Bindley and Maryemma Watson, from Llangammarch Wells. They play a good range of upbeat acoustic covers from old favourites like Fleetwood Mac, Queen and Stevie Wonder and some original work.
The Cardboard Box Thieves are a folk group from Builth Wells who will perform all their own work from 12 midday. Bob Warburton (bass) writes the lyrics and Ian Jones (banjo) sets them to music. They are accompanied by Gary Williams on the guitar and Kate Williams with her accordion. Their songs are all stories set to music with an emphasis on singing and inspired by various timeless genres from Americana to klezmer, blues, country and bluegrass.
October 5 is also UK Fungus Day, an annual celebration of our fungal world. As well as buying fresh and dried mushrooms from Coed Talylan, customers are invited to bring their own mushrooms along to him at the market for identification.
A wide range of other produce will also be available at the market, mostly grown, reared or processed within 25 miles. From fresh greens and leafy veg from Black Mountain Itals to beef from The Welsh Farm, sheep’s cheese from Ffynnon Wen, gluten-free Tasty Local Cakes, charcuterie from The Baker’s Pig, preserves, pickles and marmalade from JAR’d, Garreg Fechan Honey and lamb and mutton from The Tegfan Farm.
Austringer Cider bring cider and perry and hot coffees can be obtained from Handlebar Barista. Hot snacks in the shape of pasties, sausage rolls and Scotch eggs will keep spirits up even if it rains.
