Libanus Show took place on August Bank Holiday Saturday in Cefn Cantref.
Despite poor weather in the morning, a fantastic time was had by all.
On the sheepdog field Rob Ellis and Arthur Jenkins took the honours in the open classes and Robert Ellis and David Millichap in the novice classes. The trial was organised by sheepdog stewards, David and Kevin Evans. Kevin recently won the Welsh National Sheepdog trial – single and brace (pair) competitions. Good luck to him in the international which takes place in Scotland in September.
On the showfield another strong sheep show saw Lewis Rees take home the champion cup for his Bluefaced Leicester ram. It was an excellent showing of sheep which saw more than 12 different breeds on the field. In the young handler section Harriet Biddle and Lexi Phillips took the first prize in their age sections.
In the horse classes the show judge did an outstanding job, with a large number of entries. Gerwyn and Andrea Rogers took home the championship with a beautiful black Welsh Cob. The highlight of the horse ring was the fancy dress class and the appearance of a dragon onto the field.
The day finished with a clean shear competition with more than 30 competitors in the novice and open sections. The hardest job on the show field was judging this competition, which was, as usual, excellently done by Lewis Jones, who also happens to be the show president for the year alongside his wife, Jean. The presentation of cups proved interesting with presidents presenting cups to each other for the female sheep champion and most points in the craft section!
As usual the dog show was very well supported with Olivia and Belle winning the championship with their dog, Poppy.
The children’s sports was a highlight of the afternoon with a very large group of enthusiastic young people.
Once again the nearby Royal Observer Corps Nuclear Monitoring Post Bunker proved a popular attraction and a great place for stewards to hide deep underground if they didn’t want to be contacted. The bunker has recently been restored following its decommissioning in 1992.
Show chairman Gareth Jones said: “Shows like Libanus don’t happen without a huge among of support from local people and businesses. Our judges give their time and share their skills and experience free of charge, stewards likewise donate their time – whether it is their first year in the role or their 45th.
“Our hosts, Bruce, Katie, Jacob and Megan Evans generously share their home with us for the day making the event possible.
“There are many more people and organisations who make this possible, thanks to everyone who supports in any way.”
