McCartneys reported an excellent trade on an entry of 204 weaned calves at the special sale on behalf of the Brecon & Radnor Suckled Calf Rearers Society Ltd.

The sale took place at Knighton Market on Tuesday, October 29.

Prize classes were judged by Mr Roger Eggleton.

The results were as follows:

Champion Animal, sponsored by Agrii Knighton, and Best Heifer, sponsored by Caleb Roberts – A Rowlands & Son (420kg/£2200).

Best Steer, sponsored by Caleb Roberts – A Rowlands & Son (410kg/£1550 per head).

Best Pair, sponsored by Trevoil Farm Feeds – ARP& DR Wilson (340kg/£1190 per head).

Best Group of four or more Steers sold to the highest pence per kilo, sponsored by Hay & Brecon Farmers – RP Morgan (225kg to 533.3ppk/£1200 per head).

Best Group of four or more Heifers sold to the highest pence per kilo, sponsored by Hay & Brecon Farmers – AE Gough & Son (250kg to 424ppk/£1060per head)

Best Pen of four or more Cattle sired by a Limousin Bull, sponsored by the British Limousin Cattle Society – AA & MG Wozencraft (280kg Steers/£930 per head).

Best Pen of four or more Cattle sired by a Charolais Bull, sponsored by the British Charolais Cattle Society – DWR Reynolds & Son (370kg Steers/£1290 per head).

It proved to be fantastic trade, beating vendors expectations, with a ring full of buyers. There was strong demand for both steers and heifers, and a notable uplift in prices from a strong trade last year. More cattle could easily have been sold.

Weaned heifer calves averaged 358.40ppk and £1045.38 per head, with trade topping at £2200 for the Champion animal from A Rowlands & Son, being a 430kg (13m) Limousin x heifer, making 523.80ppk. Top price per kilo was 637.90ppk for a 290 kilo Limousin x heifer to £1850 from the same home. The run of heifers from A Rowlands & Son also sold to £1950 for a 430kg (12m) Limousin x heifer to 453.50ppk; 548.10ppk for a 270kg Limousin x heifer to £1480; 491.80ppk for a 305kg Limousin x heifer to £1500 and 482.80ppk for a 290kg Limousin x heifer to £1400. 455.10ppk for a 345kg Limousin x heifer to £1570 from AA & MG Wozencraft.

Charolais x heifers sold to 424ppk for eleven 250kg Charolais x heifers to £1060 from AE Gough & Son.
