McCartneys report an excellent sale of 700 store sheep and 90 store cattle at Knighton Market on Friday, August 16.

What a start to the season! An absolutely fantastic trade, which far outreached many vendor’s expectations.  There was strong buying support and very good demand for all breed and sizes of sheep.  

The start of the season saw, overall, a yard of quality sheep on offer, however there were still small lamb in among them.

Ram lambs (301) averaged an impressive £112.92 per head, selling to £155 per head for Texel X lambs from CE Tudge & Son. Also to £139 per head and £133.50 per head for pens of Texel X lambs from CE Tudge & Son. £133 per head for Texel X lambs from WV Morgan. £132 per head for Continental X lambs from AJ & IH Morris. £131 per head for Texel X ram lambs from D & S Jones.

Mixed lambs (255) averaged £106.25 per head, selling to £125 per head for Suffolk X lambs from Miss L Jones.  Also to £118 per head for Texel X lambs from G Roberts.  £110 per head for Beltex x lambs from NC Davies.

Ewe lambs (80) averaged £101.28 per head selling to £113 per head for Texel X lambs from AE Gough & Son.

Wether lambs (64) averaged £100.63 per head, selling to £110 per head for Aberfield X lambs from JT Williams & Son.

On the day, Continental X lambs averaged £111.01 per head throughout. Hillbred sheep, which included some very small lambs, averaged £79.91 per head, and sold to £99.50 per head for Speckled X ram lambs from B Norgrove. Also to £80 per head for Welsh ram lambs from B Wozencraft.

Overall, large lambs £125-£155; medium lambs £90-£120; smaller lambs £70-£85; very small lambs £40-£60.

Another fantastic cattle trade and nice to see several vendors returning again today and enjoying a good trade in every section.

Feeding bulls averaged £1331 and 311.54ppk selling up to 345.30ppk for 2 Lim X Bulls (8-10m) 430kg to £1485 from M & A Powell. Also to 340.70ppk for 2 Lim X Bulls (8-9m) selling for £1465 from the same vendor.

Store steers averaged 324ppk and £1519.04 per head selling to 350.60ppk for 5 Lim X Steers 445kg (16m) to £1560 from Davies Bros. Also to 345.30ppk for 6 Lim X Steers - 475kg (16m) to £1640 from the same vendor. Also to 336ppk for 2 Blonde X Steers 445kg (17m) from GV Hardwick & Son. Again get your steers to Knighton, we have plenty of competitive bidders around the ring. Next top price per head was £1590 for 6 Char X Steers (15m) from RW Price & Son.

Store heifers averaged 304ppk and £1346.93 per head selling to 371.90ppk for a Lim X Heifer -320kg (9m) to £1190 from M & A Powell. Also to 354.5ppk for a Lim X Heifer -440kg 16m to £1560 from HM Rees & Son. Top price per head was £1690 for a Blonde X Heifer – 500kg (16m) 338ppk from a lovely run of cattle from WW Griffiths & Sons. Also to £1670 for a Lim X Heifer – 535kg (19m) from Davies Bros.
