A light aircraft crash that killed two people is thought to have occurred when the plane was unable to recover from an "inadvertent manoeuvre".

A report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch into the September 2016 crash, which claimed the lives of pilot Nick Jefferies and friend Scott Penlington, has now been released.

It said witnesses had noted the plane’s wing had folded back on itself before it corkscrewed and hit the ground at Cwmbach, near Builth Wells.

The report described the crash as "not survivable" and examined the reason for the collapse of the wing.

It found there was a structural failure near the root of the wing, caused by upward bending beyond its design limits.

No pre-existing defects or faults were found but said the failure most likely happened due to an "attempted recovery from an inadvertent manoeuvre inducing a structural overload."

The report could not establish the cause of the unintended manoeuvre but said possible reasons included an event inside the aircraft taking the pilot by surprise, a medical issue or incapacitation of the pilot or passenger, or an attempt to avoid a potential collision with an object or bird.

Pilot Mr Jefferies, who was 54, was reported to have been friends with One Direction star Harry Styles and had previously taken him for flying lessons in the single-engine two-seater Cosmik plane, decked in the Union Flag colours, that crashed.

The pilot and friend Mr Penlington were both from Holmes Chapel, Cheshire which is also the hometown of the pop star.
