The fire service has said it will always discourage the use of candles, due to the dangers involved, this Candle Safety Week.

With the darker night’s drawing in, candles may be a popular way to make homes cosier in the winter evenings.

But Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) has reminded the public that it’s important to remember that candles are an open flame, which can cause devastation if left unattended.

MAWWFRS says it is understandable that many people will wish to use them for a variety of different reasons, whether it is part of a religious or seasonal celebration, or simply to make the home smell nice during the darker winter months.

But now is a perfect opportunity to re-evaluate the risks of using candles and consider using safer alternatives instead, the fire service adds.

Home Fire Safety Manager, Wayne Thomas said: “The use of candles can be relaxing and form part of a celebration, however, don’t let them spoil the occasion by causing fire and devastation to your home.

“Artificial candles are always a safer option especially if there are children and animals in the area. We encourage you to check out our Candle safety advice and take advantage of our Free Home Safety Checks.”

MAWWFRS also offer Safe and Well visits where the Community Safety team can provide advice either over the phone or visit your property to provide support on home safety.

You can book your visit by calling 0800 169 1234 or book online here.
