Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) has played its part in the UK’s largest ever fire service convoy, sending vital equipment to Ukraine to support frontline emergency workers affected by the ongoing conflict.

The convoy, which departed the UK in early April, saw MAWWFRS join 17 other Fire and Rescue Services from across the country in delivering over 30 fire service vehicles and more than 15,000 pieces of equipment to Ukrainian firefighters. The operation was coordinated by the charity FIRE AID and supported by His Majesty’s Government.

Travelling through France, Germany and Poland before arriving in Ukraine, the convoy added to a growing total of aid provided by UK fire services since the start of the war in 2022. So far, UK fire services have donated 119 vehicles and more than 200,000 pieces of equipment.

Each fire service involved, including MAWWFRS, ensured that their own local operations remained fully equipped and that only surplus items were donated.

Taking part in the convoy on behalf of MAWWFRS was Watch Manager Rob Kershaw, who said: “It has been a privilege to form part of this convoy and to represent FIRE AID and MAWWFRS.

“During the convoy, we have received invaluable support and assistance from the FRSs and Police Forces of each country we have travelled through. They have assisted us in coordinating and escorting the convoy, as well as hosting us for our overnight stays.”

Chief Fire Officer Roger Thomas KFSM said: “MAWWFRS is proud to form part of this latest convoy to Ukraine and to support the donation and delivery of vital firefighting equipment to our Ukrainian colleagues.

“The events in Ukraine have resonated across the FRS community and this convoy highlights the ongoing commitment of the UK’s FRSs to supporting the country’s Firefighters.”
