Eight football coaches from Hay St Mary’s Football Club will be walking from Chepstow Castle to Hay Castle across three days to raise money for the junior section of the club.
The 76-mile trek will begin on Friday, May 3, at Chepstow Castle and the eight coaches will make their way to Symonds Yat, Hereford and finish at Hay Castle on Sunday, May 5.
The team are aiming to raise money to continue the success of Hay St Mary’s Junior football teams.
On Friday, the walkers will walk 23 miles from Chepstow Castle to Symonds Yat. The following day, the team will walk 30 miles from Symonds Yat to Hereford. On the third and final day, a 23-mile walk from Hereford to Hay Castle will end the team’s challenge.
Football coach, Nathan Morgan, who will be taking part in the walk spoke about the reason behind the fundraiser. He said: “As a non-profit organization, we rely heavily on community support to cover the considerable costs associated with running our club. Our primary goal is to make football accessible and affordable for all children in our community, ensuring they have the opportunity to participate in this wonderful sport.
“To achieve this, we are constantly seeking ways to reduce expenses so that we can keep registration fees as low as possible. However, it is still crucial for us to fundraise in order to maintain quality facilities, provide adequate training equipment, and offer coaching resources.
“Let's come together as a community and ensure that financial barriers do not hinder any child's passion for football. Together, we can help create memories that will last a lifetime.”
The coaches taking part are Nathan Morgan, Dan Jones, Tommy Swales, Claire Swales, Sam Cook, Gary Price, Joe O’Hagan and Josh Davies. A celebration will be held at the football club following the completion of the walk.
A crowdfunding page has been set up by the team with a target goal of £1,000. They have nearly reached their goal already before the walk has begun.
