A group of Gwernyfed High School students are preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime sports and cultural tour to South Africa, with the local community coming together to support the initiative.

The tour, which goes beyond sports, offers students a unique opportunity to represent their school and community, while engaging in cultural exchange and personal development.

“This tour is about so much more than matches,” said one of the students.

“It’s about the courage to step out of our comfort zones, connect with others, and carry the spirit of sport across continents.”

To help fund the trip, the school is organising a community fundraiser on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5. The event will take place at Drovers Rest Farm in Hay-on-Wye from 11am to 4pm, featuring South African street food, live entertainment and games, family-friendly activities, an auction with a variety of prizes, and the chance to meet the animals in a stunning countryside setting.

All proceeds from the family fun day will go towards covering sports kits and additional travel costs for the students. This will help to ensure every selected student can take part, regardless of financial background.

“This fundraiser is about community spirit,” says a parent involved in the organising.

“Whether you have a child going on the tour or not, this is an event for everyone. It’s a chance to lift up our young people, to back their ambition, and to give them memories that will last a lifetime.”

For those unable to attend the event, a GoFundMe page has also been set up, giving friends, family, businesses, and supporters near and far the opportunity to donate and show their support. This can be found online at: https://shorturl.at/AH9wU
