THIS magnificent man and his flying machine have pulled off a feat not seen in the skies over Talgarth for many years.

Dave McCarthy, who is a member of the Black Mountains Gliding Club, achieved a very rare 500km flight in his Mini Nimbus glider.

Taking off from Talgarth Airfield, he followed a route – or “task” as it’s described in gliding circles – comprising the following turn points: Talgarth to Edgehill then on to Builth Wells then to Swalcliffe before finishing back at Talgarth. The total task distance flown was 503.4 km.

The flight took place on a day with good gliding conditions on Sunday,

July 2.

There have been very few 500km glider flights from Talgarth.

After his flight, Dave, who lives in Carmarthen, said: “At the beginning of this year my wife asked me what my ambitions were and I said that one was to do a 500km flight from Talgarth because I didn’t think many people have achieved this.

Mr Codd said anyone interested in trying out gliding could book a trial lesson at the Black Mountains Gliding Club. These lessons from Talgarth Airfield are flown in dual-controlled gliders with qualified instructors.
