Gwernyfed High School has celebrated the record-breaking achievements of its pupils in this year’s GCSE examinations.

The school has praised its pupils for achieving “remarkable” results, reflecting not only their academic excellence but also their resilience and dedication.

This achievement follows the school’s recent removal from special measures by Estyn at the end of the summer term, marking another significant milestone as the school continues to go from strength to strength.

Headteacher Kirsty Retallick said: "We are incredibly proud of all our Year 11 pupils for their significant achievements in this year’s GCSE examinations. These results are a testament to their hard work and perseverance, especially during such a challenging few years for the school.

“I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to their families, as well as our dedicated teachers and staff, whose tireless efforts have ensured that our pupils were well-prepared, both academically and emotionally, to succeed."

The average Capped Nine Points score for pupils at Gwernyfed was 406, which is a significant improvement from 2019, when it was 369 - the last normal assessment period before Covid. The average capped points score includes the best grades in English, Maths, and Science, along with the best six other qualifications.

The school congratulates Edith, Jack, Eva, Hannah, Seth, Natalie, Gwen, and Rhiannon for their exceptional achievements, earning A* and A grades across the board. They also extend their congratulations to all their other wonderful pupils who have excelled this year.

Gwernyfed is particularly proud of their Ukrainian pupils - Daria, Nil, and Anastasia - who, despite facing numerous cultural and language barriers since joining the school due to the war, have excelled in their studies and become vital, vibrant members of the school community.

Across the board, 25 per cent of all grades were A/A* and 52 per cent were A/B.

Many of Gwernyfed’s pupils will be returning to study at their growing and vibrant sixth form, while others will be following bespoke pathways, including performance arts, specialist agricultural courses, and work-based apprenticeship routes. The school wishes them all the very best of luck.

As pupils move on to the next stage of their education or training, the school will continue to provide support and guidance, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future endeavours.

Gwernyfed would also like to congratulate Year 10 for their outstanding module and GCSE results, which provide an excellent foundation for further record-breaking results next year too - the future is very bright indeed.
