A new cemetery has been established in south Powys thanks to a collaboration between the county council and town council.
The extension to the existing cemetery in Hay-on-Wye has been developed on an adjacent piece of land after the original cemetery reached its capacity after opening in 1875.
As part of the collaboration, Hay-on-Wye Town Council developed the acre of land while Powys County Council will be responsible for its daily operation and maintenance.
Cllr Richard Church, Cabinet Member for a Safer Powys, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to develop a new cemetery, which will provide burial space for the people of Hay on Wye for over 75 years.
“This development would not have been possible if it wasn’t for our collaboration with Hay-on-Wye Town Council and the local county councillor and I would like to thank them in helping us maintain this important service for the town.”
Cllr Fiona Howard from Hay-on-Wye Town Council said: "The town council are very happy that the much-needed extension is now open. This is thanks to collaboration with Powys County Council and the hard work of all the councillors involved."
