Asthma UK & British Lung Foundation Wales are calling for the Welsh Government to establish a ‘transition period’ for vulnerable people when shielding ends at the end of the month.

The charity recently conducted a survey of people with lung conditions in Wales which found that almost 70% of people still expressed major anxiety about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey also found that many will continue to shield after the advice for Clinically Extremely Vulnerable people formally changes on 31st March, with many citing having both doses of their vaccine being the point they would consider resuming normal activities.

Other findings include more than 3/4s saying they will continue to wear a face covering indoors post-pandemic and over 30% saying that seeing their family/loved ones is the primary thing they are looking forward to post-lockdown.

“This survey shows that vulnerable people continue to be anxious about the months ahead.” said Joseph Carter, Head of Asthma UK & British Lung Foundation Wales.

“Over the past 12 months thousands of people across Wales have put their lives on hold in order to shield and protect themselves from COVID-19. Now, as we look to start winding down restrictions, it’s important that the Welsh Government do all it can to reassure people that it is safe for them to begin the transition back to normal life.

“With shielding set to pause in just two weeks’ time we believe it’s vital there be a transition period established – to allow those who don’t feel able to stop shielding until the vaccination programme has progressed to continue receive the support they need.

“In order to do this, we must ensure everyone who is vulnerable, including those with asthma, are prioritised for vaccination. Our survey shows that having both doses of the vaccine is the key trigger that will motivate people to stop shielding and research has highlighted the increased risk of people with asthma to develop Long COVID after contracting the virus.

“We recognise the huge efforts the Welsh Government has undertaken to this point to support those shielding. That’s why, as we enter the home stretch, we must continue to ensure that people continue to have all the support they need to stay safe and well.”
