BRECON’S Homebase store is to close as it has been unable to reach an agreement on the lease with its landlord.

It is unclear how many staff will be affected but the DIY and garden centre chain has said its priority is to support its staff. The company hasn't said when the store will close.

Creditors voted in favour of a company voluntary arrangement (CVA), an arrangement to reduce a company’s debts, last August when it was announced 42 of the chain’s 250 or so stores would close.

Under the agreement landlords were able to terminate leases from July 1.

Homebase has said it has been unable to reach an agreement to remain at its purpose built store at the edge of town Brecon Enterprise Park which opened in 2006.

The store also contains a concession for catalogue shopping firm Argos.

A spokeswoman for Homebase said: "Since the launch of our CVA in August 2018, we have been in conversations with landlords to secure the right rents as part of our efforts to address our fixed cost base. Under the terms of our CVA, landlords have the opportunity to end their lease on 1 July, 2019 if they would like to pursue other opportunities for the store.

"For the Homebase store in Brecon, we have been unable to come to an agreement that works for both parties and as such, the landlord for this store has exercised their right to end the lease. Our priority is to support our affected team members who have shown us loyalty and energy throughout what has been an unsettling time."A spokeswoman for Argos confirmed its will also close. She said: "“We can confirm the Argos in Homebase Brecon is closing. Customers can continue to shop with us at our Cyfarthfa store and colleagues will be offered the opportunity to redeploy."Brecon and Radnorshire Liberal Democrat AM Kirsty Williams, and the party's by-election candidate Jane Dodds, have issued a joint statement following confirmation of the store's closure. The pair said: "We're saddened to hear that yet another shop in Brecon is closing its doors. Our thoughts are with the employees and their families, and we welcome Homebase’s commitment to support their staff. We have written to Argos to see what this will mean for the Brecon branch and the staff there."Whatever the site is used for next, we hope it will create new jobs for the area. In a town that already has more than its fair share of empty shops Brecon can scarcely afford to add another to the list."
