James Evans has called on the Welsh Government to improve sports facilities in Mid Wales.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS raised the issue with First Minister Mark Drakeford at the Senedd.

He said that, earlier this year, the UK Government announced £12.6 million of investment in grass-roots facilities in Wales, with the individual projects being directed by the FAW.

Mr Evans said: “I am here to bang the drum for more investment in Brecon and Radnorshire.

“Mid Wales has missed out on much-needed cash in Welsh Government funding streams for sporting facilities.

“Powys ranked in the bottom half of all Welsh local authorities, and that is mostly due to population numbers.

“But I am not just here to criticise because I have a solution where that money could be spent.

“Rhayader in my constituency is in much need of a facility upgrade to give them a high-quality pitch that can produce the Wales sports stars of the future.”

Mr Evans told Mr Drakeford that, although he may not have direct influence over that money, he was sure it would help bring that “much-needed investment” to his constituency if he was to say that the FAW should look seriously at the Rhayader proposals.

Earlier this year, the UK Government announced £12.6 million in funding for sporting facilities in Wales, which will be delivered in partnership with the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

Speaking after yesterday's Senedd session, Mr Evans said the new funding provided a "great opportunity" to bring in more money for facilities in mid Wales.

“Modernising and upgrading the pitches in Rhayader would be a brilliant way to spend some of that £12.6 million," he said. "It would become a true focal point for the community and local clubs.”
