James Evans wants to see armed forces personnel and veterans given better access to sports facilities.
The Brecon and Radnorshire MS asked at the Senedd how the Welsh Government is working with sport governing bodies to support the armed forces.
He welcomed the fact that Sport Wales have signed the armed forces covenant, but said he’d like to go further.
Mr Evans asked: “Would the Government consider setting up an armed forces-friendly sports club scheme across Wales to better support serving personnel, veterans and their families?
“I think this could be done, working with the WRU and the FAW and other bodies across the country.
“Such a scheme could make a real difference in helping improve the mental and physical well-being of veterans and those in the process of leaving the armed forces and transitioning to civilian life, and in strengthening community ties between the armed forces and sports bodies.”
Mr Evans asked Social Services Minister, Jack Sargeant, if he’d support such a scheme being established.
Mr Sargeant said the Government has a duty to support armed forces in all aspects of their daily lives.
He told Mr Evans: “Our remit letter to Sport Wales makes it clear we expect to see improved access to sporting opportunities for all, including members of the armed forces.
“The Member asked a particular question. I’m happy to consider his request and see what that may entail and have a conversation with Sport Wales and key stakeholders, such as the WRU and the FAW, to see where we can further strengthen our support for the armed forces community.”
