Crickhowell Library has been honoured by being gifted a special tree as part of a legacy from Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee.

The young hazel tree, part of the Queen’s Green Canopy “Tree of Trees”, is one of only two awarded to recipients in Powys.

It was presented in the library’s garden on Wednesday, November 23 by Tony Evans, one of the Deputy Lieutenants of Powys, on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant Mrs Tia Jones.

The library was eligible as a recipient because the volunteers who look after the garden took part in the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme, an initiative that led to the planting of over a million trees throughout the UK. The volunteers planted a flowering cherry tree in the garden as part of that project.

The “Tree of Trees” was a giant tree-shaped sculpture created for the jubilee by designer Thomas Heatherwick and installed outside Buckingham Palace. It incorporated 350 native British trees, which are now being distributed to selected recipients to reward their efforts and promote tree planting in local communities.

Queen Elizabeth II was partly inspired to create the Green Canopy project because she herself is estimated to have undertaken more than 1,500 ceremonial tree plantings throughout her reign.

Following the wishes of King Charles the project has been extended from its original scheduled conclusion in December until the end of March 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant more trees in memory of the late Queen.
