BRECON Mountain Rescue Team says it is on course for its busiest ever year.

The charity funded volunteer team said July was the busiest month in the history of the team since it was established in 1968.

Deputy team leader Mark Jones said: "The team of unpaid volunteers is normally called out around 100 times a year but this year on July alone it has attended 23 calls for help."

Mr Jones said the 23 calls it attended in July accounts for nearly a quarter of its annual total.

Call outs in July ranged from searching for a walking group lost in mist, who were found near Corn Du, to assisting a motocross rider with a broken leg on a hill between Merthyr Tydfil and Fochrhiw.

Mr Jones said as well as attending calls to assist walkers lost or injured on the Beacons the team has specialist water search and rescue teams of members who use kayaks and canoes to search rivers.

The team also assist the police in searching for missing people including children.

The team’s annual running costs are around £40,000 but other than a £1,355 grant from the Welsh Government in 2016, it is entirely dependent on donations from the public.

Mr Jones said the service couldn’t operate without the dedication of its unpaid members and the support they receive from their family and even their employers.

"The team leadership would like to thank the team members for their dedication and commitment during this very busy spell and also to thank the families and employers.

"Mountain rescue simply wouldn’t be able to support the police, ambulance and fire services without the support our team members receive behind the scenes. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all family members and employers who have enabled our members to leave work or family commitments and making this unprecedented level of response possible."
