THERE were large crowds at the Llandrindod Wells Carnival, which turned out to be another excellent day for the organisers with a great vibe amongst those on the green after the carnival procession around the town.
There were a large number of people participating in the new category of ‘Walking floats’ and the ‘Hanging Basket’ created by the Tremont Wombles went on to win the overall trophy of the Gordon Phillips Cup presented to the carnival by Councillor Jon Williams Mayor to recognise Gordon Phillips contribution to the carnival.
Following the judging at Powys County Hall car park by judges Councillor Jon Williams, Mayor and his wife Jo, Ionwen Spowage, head teacher of Ysgol Calon Cymru which opens in September in Llandrindod and Builth and the schools chair of governors, Sharon Hammond, the grand colourful carnival procession made its way around the town led by the Llandrindod Wells Silver Band.
The carnival queen Anghared Edwards was crowned by the Mayor and his wife and she then went on to present the awards to the winners of the floats and fancy dress competitors.
For those who were football fans a fan zone was set up on the green and those watching the giant television screen drowned the green with cheers when England scored.
The afternoon entertainment was from Team Extreme with their bike, scooter and in-line skate tricks as well as workshops for people to have a go. In addition the Wye Valley Axe men gave a display. Later in the day there was a lorry pull competition through Middleton Street, where a number of teams took part.
Evening entertainment was from Lucky Pierre who entertained more people than ever staying later on the green. There were a large number of stalls and games and it was great to see local groups and organisations coming out to promote themselves and have fun. The whole day’s activities were organised by the Llandrindod Round Table and Ladies Circle.
Afterwards the carnival chairman Michael Gough said “Once again the whole town came out to support the carnival and I am amazed the number of people who stayed late to enjoy the music right up till the end. Many were still on the green at 10 pm when we closed.”
