Llandovery Farmers’ Market is to host the Llandovery in Bloom Garden Competition awards ceremony this August.
The Llandovery in Bloom Garden Competition judges will announce this year’s winners at Llandovery Farmers’ Market from 12 midday on Saturday, August 3.
The ceremony will award prizes in seven categories on the historic Market Square. The market itself runs from 10am to 2pm with a range of locally produced foods accompanied by musical entertainment from local artists.
The day coincides with the official opening of Pethau Pawb, Llandovery’s new Library of Things on Stone Street, just around the corner from Market Square.
Market Manager Raoul Bhambral said: “This is such an exciting time for Llandovery. The farmers’ market is supporting local food businesses and artists and is helping the local economy. The garden competition has helped wildlife all around the area. Now the Library of Things will help reduce waste and unnecessary spending which will help people to save money. So many benefits all round, right here.”
This year’s categories for Flowers in Bloom are:
• Best garden up to 100 sq yds
• Best garden over 100 sq yds
• Best dwelling frontage
• Best business including public houses
• Best hanging basket
• Best senior citizen’s display
• Best vegetable display
Pat Smith, Llandovery in Bloom organiser, said: “I have been involved with the Llandovery in Bloom garden competition for more than 15 years, and have so enjoyed escorting the judges around our town during that time.
“It was a pleasure to see the beautiful displays in the business category, but more especially to meet the individual gardeners with their obvious love and understanding of their plants.”
This year’s judge, Mel Guy from Llansadwrn, added: “What a special day! It truly was a privilege to visit, meet and judge the extraordinary gardens and gardeners of Llandovery. Thank you!”
A range of local food produce and entertainment
The Market celebrates a range of goods grown or produced within 25 miles of Llandovery. These include beef and charcuterie, sheep’s cheese, a range of bread, sourdough and baguettes, local cakes, jams, marmalades, chutneys and preserves, honey, vegetables, fresh and dried flowers and pollinator-friendly plants. They will also have pasties, scotch eggs and freshly-brewed coffee made with local milk.
CliveJ provides entertainment during the morning of the market. He is a vocalist/keyboard player presenting a selection of music from the 60s to the 90s. After the garden awards ceremony Bekka Stickland follows with Celtic covers and her own original songs. Her soft, soothing and inspirational voice both relaxes and inspires - perfect for a peaceful shopping day.
The Mayor of Llandovery Cllr Matthew Paul said: “I am really pleased to see the new farmers’ market getting bigger and better every month. Llandovery is a historic market town and it's great to have such an interesting and diverse range of producers bringing locals and visitors into the Market Square, boosting trade for the whole town. I would like to thank the organisers and colleagues on Llandovery Town Council who have made this happen, and wish the Farmer’s Market every success.”
The next market is on Saturday, September 7.
Don’t buy – rent at low-cost instead
Pethau Pawb is the place to borrow and share everything with everyone.
Project Manager Helen Morris explained: “We work just like a library of books, but Pethau Pawb will lend out things, such as carpet cleaners, strimmers, tools, camping equipment, even musical instruments for a low weekly fee.
“Why buy when you can borrow for a fraction of the cost? Call in to see us, find out more about how we work, and register as a member for free!”
