Llangasty WI has marked its 95th anniversary with a special celebratory event.

Afternoon tea was enjoyed by Llangasty WI members, former members and guests at Tall John’s House in Llangasty.

The anniversary event was held on Wednesday, October 23.

A selection of photographs, minute books and memorabilia were on display during the celebration, which illustrated the WI’s presence at Llangasty from its establishment in 1929 to the present day.

Back in 1929, morning newspapers were fascinated by the arrival in Britain of “chain stores” such as the Woolworths company and a small Leeds-based company called Marks & Spencer - both of which were starting to change the face of Britain’s high streets.

But women in Brecon that year at Llangasty were setting up a branch of another new arrival - The Llangasty Women’s Institute.

The celebration of its 95th anniversary recently - which was attended by nearly 50 people - prompted plenty of reminiscing and conversation between members, both old and new.

The event was also a chance for members and former members to reflect on the changes that have occurred during Llangasty WI’s existence and provided the opportunity to look forward to more ways to enjoy each other’s company and friendship.

Llangasty WI meets at Llangasty Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 2pm.
