The League of Friends of Brecon Hospital received a generous Christmas gift from the Llanhamlach community during their annual carol service at Llanhamlach Church on Sunday, December 15.

The Friends of Brecon Hospital, which raises funds to provide additional equipment and services for Brecon Hospital, was selected as Llanhamlach Church’s chosen local charity for 2024.

At the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols service, the congregation welcomed the Friends’ vice-chair, Penny Morgan, who received a cheque for £540 on behalf of the charity.

The donation was the result of collections from three key services held by the church throughout the year: Harvest Thanksgiving, the Festival of Hymns, and the Christmas Carol service.

Speaking for the congregation of over 40, Dr Mervyn Bramley, as Treasurer, told the Brecon & Radnor Express: “Every year, Llanhamlach Church donates the collection from three special services - its Harvest Thanksgiving, its Festival of Hymns and its Christmas Carols - to a worthy local charity.

“We like to invite a representative of the charity to our carol service to receive our gift and tell us how our donation will help its work, and we’re particularly pleased to support the Friends of Brecon Hospital this year.  We all value the services and care our local hospital provides immensely.”

n response, Penny Morgan expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Friends of Brecon Hospital. She explained that the charity works closely with the hospital’s management to ensure the additional resources they provide complement NHS services. In particular this year, the Friends will be funding gifts for every patient in the hospital over the Christmas period, as well as a special dinner for support staff.

As usual, the carol service wouldn’t have been complete without the traditional mulled wine, mince pies and community chat at the end of the service.
