A man with brain cancer has run the London Marathon and raised more than £20,000 for charity.
Edward (Ed) Lewis, a civil engineer originally from Brecon, completed the 26.2-mile race on Sunday, April 21 in aid of Brain Tumour Research (BTR)
He was joined by his sister Emma Eynon, and brother, Chris Lewis, who also ran in aid of the charity.
The siblings’ support of the charity comes after Ed was diagnosed with a grade 3 oligodendroglioma following a seizure in June 2022.
Having been treated for anxiety and depression for three years prior, the discovery of a 6cm wide tumour in the middle of his brain came as a “complete shock” to Ed and his family.
Following the diagnosis, the father-of-two underwent surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Ed’s tumour is now stable and being monitored with three-monthly scans.
The marathon was initially in doubt for Ed after he suffered a knee injury with IT (iliotibial) band, which meant he was unable to run during the last three weeks of his training programme.
Despite being told by professionals he shouldn’t run, some last minute physio and a cortisone injection two days before the marathon meant he was able to take part.
Ed finished the marathon with Emma in four hours and two minutes, with Chris completing the run in four hours and 18 minutes.
“We’re hugely grateful everyone for their support and phenomenal donations to BTR - which stands at a huge £20,145!” said Ed.
“I’m really hoping that this has raised awareness of the charity and how underfunded they actually are.”
Brain Tumour Research funds sustainable research at dedicated centres in the UK. It also campaigns for the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more in research into brain tumours in order to speed up new treatments for patients and, ultimately, to find a cure. The charity is the driving force behind the call for a national annual spend of £35 million in order to improve survival rates and patient outcomes in line with other cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia.
