As the start of the new school year approaches, GPs across Mid-Powys are urging parents and guardians to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated.

The Powys school vaccination programme plays a vital role in safeguarding the health of our young people, protecting them from a range of serious illnesses that can disrupt their education and overall well-being.

Key vaccinations offered through the programme:

  • Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine: Administered to children aged 2-3 and all school-aged children to protect against seasonal flu.

  • dTaP/IPV (4-in-1): Given at 3 years and 4 months old, this vaccine shields children from diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and polio.

  • MMR: Administered at school entry age to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella.

  • HPV Vaccine: Offered to students in school years 8 and 9 (ages 12-14) to guard against Human Papillomavirus, a leading cause of cervical and other cancers.

  • Td/IPV (3-in-1) and MenACWY: Administered in school year 9 (ages 13-14), protecting against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, and meningococcal disease, including meningitis and septicemia.

Gareth Ratcliffe, PAVO Health Promotions Facilitator for Mid Powys GPs said: “These vaccines are essential for keeping our children healthy and ensuring they can continue their education without the interruption of preventable diseases. By participating in the school vaccination programme, we are not just only protecting our own children but also helping to safeguard the wider community.”

Parents are encouraged to check their child’s vaccination records and schedule any missed vaccinations. Together, we can ensure that our children are prepared for a successful, healthy school year.
