As we approach the upcoming August Bank Holiday weekend, local GPs and pharmacies in Mid Powys are reminding patients to prepare for reduced access to healthcare services. It's crucial to plan ahead to ensure you have everything you need to stay well over the long weekend.

Gareth Ratcliffe, Health Promotions Facilitator at PAVO, emphasised the importance of foresight: "We urge everyone to think ahead. Ordering your prescriptions well in advance allows pharmacies enough time to process them. The goal is for everyone to enjoy their weekend without worry, so it's essential to be prepared."

He continued: "Planning ahead is key, especially during bank holidays when GP surgeries and pharmacies are closed. Ensure you have an ample supply of essential medications like paracetamol or cough remedies. It's also wise to have other necessities on hand, such as first aid supplies like plasters and antiseptic cream. Make sure to order any medications at least seven days before you run out, and collect them well before pharmacies close for the weekend."

In case you need non-prescription medicines like paracetamol and cannot find an open pharmacy, consider supermarkets, newsagents, or petrol stations, as they often carry a basic range of over-the-counter medications with longer opening hours than regular pharmacies.

Ratcliffe added: "If you have concerns about your medications or prescriptions, your pharmacist can provide guidance. And if you feel unwell when your GP surgery and pharmacy are closed, remember that NHS 111 is available for further assistance. Please be aware that services may be particularly busy during bank holidays.

“By planning ahead and taking these steps, you can help ensure a safe and healthy bank holiday weekend for yourself and your loved ones.”
