MOTORISTS in Brecon can now pay less than £1 for a litre of petrol.

Supermarket chain Morrisons has announced it has dropped the price of unleaded at its petrol stations, including its garage forecourt at The Watton Brecon, to 99.9 pence a litre.

Morrisons said it is first time any retailer has brought its everyday price down to below the £1 mark since June 2009.

Earlier this week the RAC predicted falling oil prices and supermarket competition would see British drivers paying less than £1 a litre by Christmas.

Bryan Burger, Morrisons petrol retail director, said it was reducing the price a fortnight earlier than expected: "Today, for the first time in more than six years, we are moving unleaded prices down to below £1 a litre.

"This is a moment where motorists will feel some relief after being clobbered by tax and price rises for the last decade."

The price of petrol peaked at £134.67p a litre in May, 2011.

Rival Asda dropped the price of unleaded at its stations from today as part of two day promotion.

Morrisons is also cutting 1p off a litre of its diesel from Saturday morning.

Morrisons said it will hold the new everyday price "for as long as possible" but it remains subject to changes in oil markets and foreign exchange movements.
