Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team were called out twice last weekend (March 8-9), both times to the Pen y Fan area, both times to walkers with an ankle injury, but in distinctly contrasting weather conditions.

The team were accompanied by Brecon Mountain Rescue Team for both callouts.

On Friday night, around 7pm, the teams were called by Dyfed-Powys Police to a male on the summit of Pen y Fan with an ankle injury, finding it difficult to walk.

The weather on Friday night was wet, windy and cloudy with visibility down to around 20 feet.

A hasty party was dispatched to the summit, followed by a kit party with stretcher. Assessed by a Casualty Carer it was concluded that the gentleman would be able to walk off slowly, avoiding the need to evacuate by stretcher.

On Sunday, it was a glorious, bright sunny day, with many visitors enjoying the amazing views across Bannau Brycheiniog.

The team was again called by Dyfed-Powys Police at 11:30am to a gentleman with a broken ankle on the side of Corn Du.

Fortunately one of the team members was already out on the hill and close by so went straight to the casualty site and was able to provide much needed valuable information to the assembling troops confirming the location and injury details. An initial party made their way up with medical kit, followed by an equipment party with stretcher and other kit.

Assessed by two casualty carers, the gentleman was given pain relief, before the injured limb was splinted and he was evacuated by stretcher back to Brecon Mountain Rescue Team’s Gator for onwards transport back down to the car park.

A spokesperson for Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: “Back at the car park he was given the once over by colleagues from Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust and MedserveWales before being advised to attend their local A&E / MIU.

“Great interteam and multiagency working.

“We have since learnt that Sunday’s casualty broke their ankle in three places, so is now well and truly plastered up (cast). We wish him a speedy recovery.”
