The only bus between Brecon and Builth Wells will not run during half term as a section of the main road will be fully closed.

The Stagecoach operated Trawscymru Service will not run between the towns on the stretch of the A470 at Llyswen.

The A road will be fully closed at the village from Monday, October 28 until Friday, November 1 effecting the whole of the 30 miles per hour zone including the Griffin Inn junction and petrol station as well as the start of the A479.

The trunk road is scheduled to be closed by the Welsh Government’s Trunk Road Agency so that it can undertake carriageway reconstruction.

Brecon Town Councillor Matthew Dorrance said in a Facebook post that he had received a letter from Powys County Council to say that services between Newtown and Builth, and services between Brecon and Cardiff will continue to run at normal times excluding only some of the departures.

Services which won’t run include the 6.35am and 8.10pm Newtown to Builth services, and the 6.07am Crossgates to Builth service.

The 6.48pm Builth to Newtown service also will not run, and journeys from Cardiff will terminate at Bishop’s Meadow in Brecon.

The 4.10pm and and 6.30pm journeys from Cardiff will terminate at Felinfach.

The Sunday timetable will run as normal, and school and college transport won’t be affected as it’s half term break.

The letter from Powys said: “Although we have tried to negotiate a partial closure enabling public transport to remain unaffected, we have been informed there will not be access for any vehicles and had to make emergency arrangements.

“The service bus diversion route via Llandovery would be far too lengthy and unable to make connections with other vehicles, or hold any consistent timetable.

“With this in mind, unfortunately we have no option but to suspend service between Builth Wells and Brecon for this week.

“We will endeavour to pass this message to as many residents as possible through social media, and roadside publicity which will be updated at the earliest opportunity”.

The Powys letter added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but unfortunately there is little we can do at this time.

“Due to the closure taking place within half term, passenger numbers are much lower and disruption is kept to a minimum.”

Stagecoach Wales said: “We apologise for an inconvenience caused due to circumstances beyond our control.”

However the roadworks mean that not only will the bus offer a limited service, but that residents who live in the area could struggle to drive.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “These works are an essential reconstruction of the carriageway pavement through the village of Llyswen. It is intensive work that will bring long-term benefits, and will also see the installation of the traffic calming measures which have been requested but haven’t been able to be installed because of the poor condition of the existing carriageway.

“The timing has been chosen primarily to avoid disruption to schools, including the primary school in the village. Significant efforts have been taken to minimise disruption where possible, but the extent of the work means it is inevitable there will be inconvenience to local properties and traffic. Engagement with local residents to inform them of the plans has taken place.”
